Hunger related to poverty or ailments vanishes when you pray to Shri Odhavaneswarar, Chottru Thurai Nather, at the Tholaya Selva Nathar temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. As the name of the Lord indicates, Chottru Durai (Lord of Rice), this temple is where people go to pray for nourishment or alleviation from poverty.

A famine of the worst kind once struck this beautiful village in Thanjavur. Arulalan, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, wept and prayed to the Almighty to save the people of the village from hunger and suffering. All of a sudden it began raining incessantly and the entire temple and village was flooded with rainwater. It was dark and wet. The weeping Arulalan suddenly saw something floating towards him. When it came closer to him, he saw that it was a bowl. As soon as he picked it up, he heard a voice saying that it was an ‘akshaya pathra’ (inexhaustible vessel, in Sanskrit). The voice of the Lord said that the bowl would never be empty and would automatically replenish itself. Arulalan was elated and went on to feed all the people in the village.
